So i've had my 07 street glide two years and im already at 56,000 miles. I ride a lot, and i've got my bike just how i like it. I really dont want to trade , but i don't want to loose money on it either. So how many miles can i get out of my 103 engine before i need to rebuild ?
Thats a damn good question!
I certainly can't answer it but want to see what responses you get as I am curious too. I have an 07 fxd with 22,500 miles on it and want to know what to expect also.
Things to consider that change expectations:
1. climate - hot like Texas or Arizona will likely shorten life
2. maint - fossil, semi syn or syn oils and frequency of oil changes.
3. filter quality - are you using the HD 5 micron or a mystyery filter?
4. Lots of stop and go in traffic will shorten life. Even a couple of extended high heat stints can reduce life. I never like to hear a cyclinder cut out due to heat (HD computer cylinder autoshutdown)- to me that means damage is already happening.
5. How hard do you ride? Full bore, hard revving, two up? All of these?
I put 14.000 miles on the UG last year and only three on my car. With vacations we'll average about 15,000 per year. (Indiana based) Even when I was in sales early in my career and covered the entire State of South Carolina where I was assigned, I could only put on about 2,200 miles per month.
Rides now at dealer for 15,000 checkup. I can't imagine riding more than 15,000-20,000 miles per year while I still have a job this is a 50 mile round trip.
something i did notice my biker buddys who swear by using harley syn3 are rebuilding
there motors about 30,000 miles other bikers i know and talked to who use moble1
or amsoil the motors are lasting over 100,000 miles its kinda funny the syn3 harley
guys wont admit it and are scared that harley will not honor there warrenty-ride safe
wow! you have buddies rebuilding at 30,000 miles while other buddies are running 100,000 miles. Sure makes me glad that I traded my heritage when it had 22,000 miles on it. I was only 8,000 miles away from a rebuild on a like new bike, other than the motor was almost crapped out from syn 3.
Gotta ask you though, did your buddies who stuck to syn 3 because of warranty concerns get HD to pick up the tab for the rebuild under warranty? Or did they pay for it themselves and still use HD for the next time they have a warranty issue?

If these guys are rebuilding their motors every 30k it isn't because of the oil. I have a friend who has run Syn3 for 84k miles in a 2000 WG and has had no problems, and he didn't even change cam-chain tensioners until 70k. I don't use Syn3 and am not promoting Syn3, as I think it is an average product at a very high price, but I don't think any name-brand synthetic oil marketed today is a bad product, including Syn3.
my 06 FLHRI had 45k+ on it when I totalled it. Never had any part of the engine cracked open on it. I am a little more **** than most so every 2k miles, all 3 fluids were changed. yeah yeah I know but hey... if you're going to go through the trouble for 4 quarts of oil, why not make it 2 more and feel better about what you're riding?
30,000 miles... that is some HARD riding to be cracking open an engine at that low mileage....
