I have a question. I hope I don't sound stupid. But is the compression release so that when you build a higher CC engine you can release the comp on a cylinder and it starts easier? Or is there something else to it? That machine work does look clean.

I don't know man. Looks a little close to the mating surfaces. Check out the picks below.

It might promote detonation where it is. Should be in the combustion chamber and not in the squish area, but it will do what it's suppose to do.

yes, the compression release so that when you build a higher CC engine you can release the comp on a cylinder and it starts easier--easier on the starter and battery

I would not be to happy with it drilled there, kinda to late now though. It will probably be fine but I havent seen one installed like that before. But that doesn't make it bad.

I've never seen the vent hole in the deck. I've always seen them in the chamber.

However, it'll probably be fine.

Who installed them for ya?

Ok, just thinking. The hole for your compression release is probably going to negate the reinforcment band on the gasket. This means that you will be running a HC motor with a reinforced gasket that is no longer reinforced because the mating surface has been compromised. Not sure if that made sense but good luck with it.
Honestly, if i were you I'd try and get the machine shop to fix it or replace the heads.
