Sounds like a weak battery or poor connections with the main starter cable or grounding. Compression could be higher than normal from carbon build up.
Ron
check the battery connections.
ground connections ,
thats about all I can think of right now.
Might wanna throw a volt meter on it when it does flash up and see what it is charging at.

Thanks, I'll check the connections tomorrow. Probably is the battery, I picked the bike up a year and a half ago so I don't know how old the battery is.
If it's the original battery then it's probably due [03] But like they said the cables may need cleaned. My friends was doing the same thing a few days ago and that fixed it.
I would recommend saving yourself some problems and changing your battery. Had the same symptoms on my 99 and it turned out to be the seven year old battery.
Mine was doing the same thing as you say my battery was 3 years old everything
was real clean so I thought it was the battery so I bought a new one from H-D
$160. While removing old battery I discoverd that the ground cable was not thight
My old battery was still good. Oh well now I have a new one
