Default Vin Etching

Did anybody get the Vin Etching done on their bikes? It was offered to me, but I refused. The salesman talked and talked about it, but again I refused, Finally he said they would do it for the price he quoted me on the bike, just rework the numbers and finally I agreed. They spent the money on this equiptment and obviously the salesman must make an extra commision on it to give it away like he did.
It's one of those things that i'm sure I will never need, even if the bike gets stolen. lol.

If mine gets stolen chances are I'll never see it again regardless. I don't think I'd want it back anyway. Let the insurance company worry about it.

What is VIN etching?
Question:
I know what the VIN is.
Isn't it illegal to mess with it?

Vin etching is a process where the vin number is somehow etched into the major components on the bike includeing the painted parts. It goes through the paint into the metal. You can't see where it has been done, unless you look at it with a black light. Even if you sand the parts down and repaint them, it will still show. I don't know how the process is done, this is what was explained to me.
I have heard that at certain rallys, police will check some bikes with black lights, but it could be BS. I would think that unless a chop shop was busted and they wanted to use this as evedence, it would probibly not come into play anywhere. The only good thing about getting it for free was that IF the bike does get stolen, I get like $1000. cause the bike is not coming back anyway
