Default Lifter tube clips PITA

I know this is the wrong section but I need some advice. I just got finished replacing all the gaskets in the top end of my 93 Softail with an Evo due to a leaking base gasket. I used the James gasket kit. Everything went smooth and by the book. I took my time and actually enjoyed learning as this is the first time I broke into an engine. All went well except I am having a biach of a time trying to get the dang clips back on the lifter tubes. Any tips or are these just a bear to get back on?

They are a bear. I made a tool out of an old aftermarket cigarette lighter bracket and a piece of west coast mirror bracket. Works for me. (-:

Sometimes when you are levering the clip back into place the lower part leans in toward the cylinders and catches on a fin. This makes it impossible for it to go down any further. Try putting a thin piece of cardboard behind them and see if that makes it any easier. Hope this helps.

I did it once and recall it being a PITA. I know I bent the little tabs trying to get them back in, but it wasn't really noticable. There must be some simple trick to it.

Easiest way to get these on...
Slide upper part into place...using small screwdriver, slide it under bottom portion, lay screwdriver on the spring collar...lift up..push in

I can pop all 4 on in under 1 minute...you should too, its easy.

Thanks for the pic of the tool HB. Sure would be nice if this was available somewhere. I bet some would sell.
My son got home and with a second set of hands these were a bit easier to get in. They now seem to be able to kick out fairly easy. Wondering how well they are going to stay in with all the vibration? Well we will see.
Anyone on here ever do this job with the James gasket kit? The reason I ask is the head gaskets are different than stock. Specifically the 4 o-rings that were on between the heads and the cylinders that are over the pins had room with the original o-rings to lay flat as some of the gasket material was removed for room for these o-rings. The new James gaskets are tight right up to these pins/spacers. So I left the o-rings off as it appeared that if I put them on it would have not allowed the head to sit flat. So anyone on here ever rebuild an evo and run into this?

Yep, I had the same problem and used the same solution.

After you do them a couple of times they're a snap.

Answered your PM, the newer gaskets did away with using the o-rings on the dowels.
