I know it's after the fact, but here's three rules of thumb...
1) never let your key leave your person,
2) always carry a spare on trips, never let it leave your wife's person!
3) read your manual... I believe there is a procedure for overriding the need for a key by entering a 5-digit number via the use of your turn signals? Or is that for turning off the alarm??
Anyway, numbers one and two should keep you out of trouble!
If you don't have the key code tag (some dealers keep them in your file) you can slip the black plastic cover off the key and see the code stamped on the key.
several years ago before cell phones, I was deer hunting about 10 miles from the nearest house. I got back to the truck, after dark, and figured out I had dropped my keys. I was lucky when I got back to my treestand they were laying on the ground.
Today, everything I own has an extra key attached to it somewhere.
Question, If i set the security system and lose the fob, but I have the key, can I use the PIN code to turn off the security system? I have an 06 Fatboy.
I always carry an extra key & fob when I tour long distance. If I am riding 2up then my wife carries the extra key.
I just installed the Smart Alarm last September and haven't taken any trips since--but took my spare fob, removed the battery, and put both in my Dopp kit. I also have extra keys to the ignition, Tour Pak rack locks, and spares of anything else that might cause me grief if I lose the main set. The two cards with info on disabling the alarm without the fob are in my wallet and with my paperwork on the bike. I figure even I can't screw up that level of preparation.
Put a key in the "cone" of the timing cover... u always be good then.
Great idea. What do you use to keep the key from rattling around? What could you wrap it with that wouldn't disintegrate from the heat inside the nosecone?
Damned if I didn't leave the house this morning without my keys. Started to leave the office a little while ago and no start. Had to use the security code to overide the system.
Nothing like a little practice session to keep you on your toes.
Said to my son just out of UGA one day...."there is a key for my harley on it somewhere, if you find it, the harley is yours" Mind you I am still riding that harley.
That sounds like a fun challenge! I bet he searched like hell for that key! I am not your son but can I come and try to find it? :-)
