I'll say this, it's a terrible tragedy. I find comfort in the fact that all the members I have met on this forum are outstanding. I would venture to say that we all love our women as much and more as we love our bikes and our country. I am honored to be included as a member of this faternity. God bless her family.

To the father who commented his girls should take a self-defense class...I HIGHLY recommend it. Just this morning, I tested out of month 4 of a 6 month Self Defense Class. If you've ever watched MMA or UFC, I'm learning much the same "forms", but with an empasis on "getting away" versus "fighting". Myself and a friend are the only 2 taking this class, 3 times a week. Hearing stories like this, re-confirms how valuable the stuff I'm learning could possibly be. As much fun as it is punching and kicking bags and grappling with the Jiu Jitsu guys, I pray I never have to use this stuff in the real world. But if I do, I sure like my chances now versus before the course.

For me, just as important as the techical skills I'm learning, is the confidence I now have knowing I stand a chance against a guy. Hopefully, that confidence alone is enough to avert an attack. Most bad guys won't "choose" a victim if they think he or she will fight back so they prey on "weak" or "non-confontational" looking people. Sometimes, even super "friendly" people. I'd rather someone take a look at me and decide to move on. Most women avoid eye contact with someone they are fearful of or when they're nervous. Through this class, I've learned something as simple as looking a guy in the eyes when he's approaching is enough to make him think you might fight back.

So, while such a course may not have done this woman any good, and I'm NOT judging her for sure, it MAY very well prevent an attack and will most certainly put the odds in favor of your wife, sister, daughter, g/f, etc of surviving one.
Great that you're doing this but carrying a concealed weapon would give you much greater protection. Take advantage of Texas' liberal gun laws.

Texas law allows you to carry it concealed in your vehicle. most attacks happen before you get in your vehicle. The self defense class is good, but if you're going to carry concealed in your car, go ahead and get the CHL. that way you can carry on your person (like when coming out of a store from shopping, etc).

very sad indeed. We just had a very similar situation here in Pearland...woman abducted going to her car..she was forced to get in car..woman missing for 5 weeks...they just found her body.

this is a trajedy that people are doing this. As a society we need to wake up and protect ourselfs...not saying anything wouldn't have happend in either case and I truly feel for the family and friends....but something needs to be done with these thugs!
