The taxi continued the merge but appeared to change his mind and performed an illegal u-turn in front of me. The taxi executed this maneuver just as I had drawn abeam his left rear quarter panel. I squeezed the front brake lever all the way to the grip and stomped the rear brake pedal all the way to the floor and steered left. ABS kicked in and allowed me maximum braking all the while allowing me to steer away from the taxi. I really thought I was going down, but the bike came to a stop, upright, a few inches away from the unawares taxi. I stopped in the road momentarily, trying to gather my wits, and watched the taxi driver wave politely and continue on his business. I considered pulling this knucklehead out of his taxi and beating his ***. However, I am a soldier stationed in a foreign country, and knew that those actions would only bring discredit upon myself and my nation. I simply looked the jackass in the eye and shook my head in disbelief at his carelessness and stupidity. I then continued on my way, negotiating the morning traffic.
I am convinced, that if my bike had not been equipped with ABS, I would have collided with the taxi or crashed trying to avoid the wreck. I am an experienced rider, who practices panic stops often, and ABS gave me the edge to avoid catastrophe! I am a believer! Any bikes I purchase in the future will certainly have this option installed if available!
I'm glad I got ABS. But. I thought you are never supposed to steer when in an emergency braking manuver? DOesnt that add to the risk or dropping the bike?
I am glad the ABS worked for you. I have it on my 08 RG and hope I never need it.
I have spent a few years in the ROK doing the same thing you are doing and, based on my expereince, would only be surprised if a taxi didn't pull out in front of me. I think everyone should spend some time riding around Korea. If you survive the experience you will be much better off for it.
yeah your not kidding....survive korea traffic and you should be all set for what ever comes your way. Even the little kids pose a serious problem...

I have been riding motorcycles for soon to be forty one years, this month...Many different situations have been encountered, have been on the losing end a time or two, some of which still to this day pain me some. In September of last year I had the good fortune of the love of my life winning a new sportster, that and the combination of selling my previous ride, enabled me to purchase the ride of my dreams my 09 SG decked out with ABS, and all the goodies..This option is solely responsible for saving my A$$ several times since, deer, a young lady on a cell phone, lane changers without signals...I swear to god, I'll never purchase another motorcycle without it. The thing flat dab stops ( no rearend trying to pass the front) done that one more times than I care to remember... ABS WORKS!
ABS is the primary reason I traded in my 2007 on the 2009.
The best thing about ABS is that for those who think they can brake just as well without them, ABS doesn't kick in UNTIL you are the lock up point with the brakes. Then they save your a**. What can you possibly lose by having them on your bike, $800? That's less than my deductible for just one "incident"!
Full face helmet, fully padded leather racing suit, abs brakes,I just might make it to a hundred years old!
You must REALLY hate ABS to be making fun of someone for escaping an accident with it. Why don't you just go ahead and run your bike into a brick wall at 100mph if it's so cool to die in a motorcycle crash?
