I put on the V&H basic slip ons last year and used the original stock HD clamps that came on the bike (new bike, only had 200 miles on it when I swapped). Have had zero problems and no leaks. The V&H clamps are junk. If you can hold a wrench, the entire job should take less than 45 mins.

I think they look and sound great. Nice rumble at idle and they really wake up when on the throttle. Very happy with them.
I spent about two hours yesterday afternoon putting Vance and Hines slip-ons on my 08 SG. In addition to the slip-ons, I also installed a HD hi-flow AC and a Vance and Hines FuelPak.
The slip-ons took about thirty minutes. Squirt the stock mufflers with some WD40 prior to pulling them off. I used the stock clamps.
The FuelPak took about thirty minutes including entering all the codes.
The AC took about an hour because I really took my time removing the brace behind the backing plate. I didn't remove the gas tank. I used a long allen wrench and guided it in with my fingers. Took quite awhile to back the bolts out because I used extreme care not to scratch my tank.
The sound is great in my opinion. Not obnoxiously loud but certainly an improvement over stock. I had the same setup on my RK and when I traded the RK in on the SG the dealer let me take the slip-ons, FP, and AC off and replace them with the stock parts. I waited until I had 1k service done on the SG and then made the changes.
Very easy job. I am by no means a mechanic and I didn't have any trouble at all. Just take your time.

Just got the 09 Basics and they came with the good/torca clamps!
Did mine in no time at all, fastened everything up good and tight, put the bags back on and then noticed I'd pushed the left one in 1/4 inch further than the right
Make sure everything lines up before you put the bags back on!
If you're doing the Air cleaner/V&H FuelPak too, e-mail V&H tech support for the settings, they were very helpful to me.
They sound great BTW.
