2009 FLHT Electra Glide Standard
List Price: $16999 BLACK
List Price: $17449 COLOR
Dealer Invoice: $13599 BLACK
Dealer Invoice: $13959 COLOR
These are the base dealer costs before actual freight and assembly costs.
Freight Cost: $375 (48 states and Alaska only)
Estimated Assembly Cost: $125-$140
Each dealership has its own method of figuring their actual cost of assembly and preparation for sale.
There is no reimbursement by the factory for this cost to the dealer.
Ready to sell cost: $14099 BLACK
Ready to sell cost: $14459 COLOR
California Emission Charge - Invoice / List Price - $160 / $200
Wholesale Incentives: no dealer holdback or sales incentives for this model.
Factory Options: cost / retail
H-D Factory Security System - $276 / $345
Wheel Option - N/A
ABS - $636 / $795
Cruise - $216 / $270
The "Ready to sell cost" is the cost of the machine sitting on the showroom floor with NO PROFIT to a dealer. Dealers do not stay in business very long by selling machines for no profit.
Many dealers charge additional fees for "Freight and Setup" over and above the selling price of the machine. Add the "Selling Price" to the "Freight and Setup" charges and subtract the "Ready to sell cost" to determine the PROFIT a dealer is asking to make. Dealers in most states are required to collect sales tax and title fees for the state. These fees are not profit to a dealer.

2009 FLHR Road King
List Price: $16999 BLACK
List Price: $17374 COLOR
List Price: $17729 2-TONE
Dealer Invoice: $13599 BLACK
Dealer Invoice: $13899 COLOR
Dealer Invoice: $14183 2-TONE

I heard, It's about 25% to 30% markup from Invoice to MSRP. Depending on the model.

"Dealers in most states are required to collect sales tax and title fees for the state. These fees are not profit to a dealer."

So what are the $390 or so that a dealer charges as docs + tags + plate for?

Title fees in PA are $22.50 + $5 is the vehicle is financed (lien). Registration is $18 for a bike and regular plates are $7.50 ($20 if personalized).

If the rest is not profit, what is it?

$390 I think is dealer prep, take it out of the crate and set it up and test ride.

I probably got hosed big on my Ultra but it was the 2-tone root beer and there was two guys standing right there wanting the same bike, I just made it in the door faster. Needless to say, they weren't in much of a mood to deal but they still did me right on my japanese trade-in so...........

No question, you have to shop to get a good deal. Remember the 2010 models will be out in July, so you might consider waiting a little bit, and seeing if you can get a good deal on an 09. Plus you'll know what upgrades (if any) are on the new models.

Freight and prep are different items.
I'm taking about docs fees but I suspect some dealers hide their prep fees under doc fees and claim that they don't charge for prep.

You might have a point here. I suspect some dealers hide their prep fees under doc fees and claim that they don't charge for prep.
