Default New Tire Question

I have a 2000 Road King that I need to replace the tires. I am looking for a higher mileage tire. What would you reccomend and what kind of miles could I get from them.

If you get about 20k on a front and 12-15k on a rear (or two rear tires to one front tire) with the stock Dunlops, I'd stick with those. The Metz's are a good tire and handle better for some, but they don't yield the mileage the Dunlops do IMO. On my 04 I had about 20k on the front and real close to 15k on the rear before I changed both out.

I agree. You can shop all over for tires but they all for the most part deliver the same average mileage. I was putting on my 3rd rear tire at about 25k and just doing the front for the 1st time. My front could have definately gone longer but I decided to get the rubber done all at once. I stick with OE Dunlops for the simple reason that if you should ever have a tire failure while out on the road (trip) that warranted the tire to be replaced, there is a HD dealer on just about every corner that should have the same tire in stock and you wouldn't have to mismatch your tires. Personally I have never mismatched any tires on any of my vehicles, cars or scoots. It's just something I won't do.

I average 16K on the rears, and on my last bike, changed the front at 33K when I put on the third rear.

Alot depends on HOW and WHERE you ride. 80% of my riding is on the Freeway, with Cruise control.

If you ride aggresivly, or on alot of twisties, then your milage will go down.

I would suggest the Dunlop Elite 3's as well. I just put them on the front and rear of my FLHX. They are noticably better than the old 402's. I'm hearing they're just as good on mileage too.

I managed 10k from the two D402's I've mounted on this SG, and decided to try the Elite 3 based on favorable feedback here and elsewhere, including some Gold Wing forums. The E3 was originally designed for GW's to address tire-wear issues, and caught on fast with that crowd. It is now catching on rapidly with HD riders.

I have an E3 on the back of my SG now, presently with 10k on it. When new it had 9.5/32" in the area closest to the center that I measure with a tire-depth gauge. It now has 6/32", so you can do the math. I figure it'll last at least 20k, probably more, and that's at least double the mileage of the D402.

What's odd is that there appears to be no handling penalty with this tire, as I find it a great performer in wet and dry conditions. Plus, the E3 doesn't track rain grooves and tar strips like the D402. I'm now a big fan and am still amazed at the mileage I'm getting. I expected maybe 50% more tread life, but it appears I'll get much more. The only downside, for some, would be that it is only available in a BW.

I just changed the original front at 26k to an E3, but that was two weeks ago, so I obviously can't comment on the durability of it just yet.
