I always like having a map to glance at from time to time. Yes, it's best to stop beside the road if you really need more than a glance, but having it right there makes the stop very efficient and quick versus pulling the map out and then having to fold it back up. As in another post, I put clear plastic contact paper under the magnetic bottom so it doesn't scratch my tank.

I bought this exact set up (its on this forum for sale - https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...ing-bikes.html) Problem was/is, I run the Wild1 517's pull back bars - On full turn, the bars come into contact with the bag... Not good... so, its up for sale...

thanks for all the comments here

+1 on the GPS. Carry the map in back and just stop to read it. They must spend hours getting that pouch to look so good in those pictures you attached. Mine looks like total crap... Haha

Default Map cases

I have used friends map case a couple of times now and plan to get my own very soon. I plan my route before hand and print it out in large font so that a quick glance is usually all i need. If I am going on a long trip i place a regular map underneath so that at fuel/rest stops I can access it easily! I do think the plastic under the magnets is a useful idea but if your tank is clean when you put it on I don't really see the need for it. I ride an 07 Fatboy roughly 15k miles a year.

I have several different magnetic map pouches I use. Keep the backs and the tank clean to minimize any scratching. They work well and in conjunction with my GPS makes for a great trip. Also great for personal notes like addresses when trying to find a place. Very useful in my opinion, but I don't look at the maps while riding, I pull over to read them.

i used one when i rode the Hoka Hey as they gave us paper directions and you were not allowed to use a GPS.

Since we rode in all types of weather, dirt, grit, sand, etc. I ended up putting that blue painters masking tape under the magnets at the third stop. It prevented the magnets from scratching the tank.

As to use it for a map, was not a good idea as it was difficult to see exactly where you were on the road. However, for the turn by turn directions they provided, it worked ok, you could look down briefly and know you were on step 3 and the next turn was at X so it did not require you to keep you eyes on it all the time.

it seemed to work well during the day, however, it was useless at night.

I used Map Quest directions taped to the windshield on my last couple of trips. I swear I will have a GPS before my next one.The map quest directions are fine until you miss one turn or hit a detour then your F*cked.Maps are impossible for me to follow while riding and difficult to see when stopped without allot of light and magnification.

I go on a number of poker runs/rallies where one is given directions to get from one point to another. I've found the Iron Rider Cruiser Map Pocket very useful. I keep the tank waxed and haven't noticed any scratches from the magnets.

I bought the River Road large and it doesn't work on a touring tank... I wanted it to keep track of next destinations and such as my GPS doesn't hold more than one waypoint.
