How many bones did it end up costing? I want to do the same, but am not sure about doing the job myself.

Chrome front end is the only way to go. If you put other chrome parts on your bike they don't show as well until the front end gets chrome. Sooner or later, if your a chromaholic, you'll spend the big money to get the front end chromed up. MoCo knows this and is why they don't give it to you stock.

You guys will love the look of the chrome forks, I do. Much easier to clean, great look and no pitting which I'm sure you've heard about or are experiencing.
I also lowered my bike at the same time. I'm not smart enough to do all that myself, though maybe I should have. The dealers mechanic screwed up on the front end lowering and forgot to put the inserts in the forks when putting the bike back together. "Hey madame service manager, how come after I hit a bump I feel this jarring through the handle bars. Is this normal"? Four mechanics looked at the bike and said ooops, I guess some parts were not put in when we lowered your bike, and BTW we fired that mechanic last week........Geez.

Bummer Man! Makes it that much better when you finally do get it home though.
I did mine myself and would do it again in a heartbeat. It's really not a tough DIY job.
Night and day difference visually.
