HERE is a link to a schematic that will show the filter kit, this one is on an FLHR, but it is the same kit. #18 is the filter, #54 is the hose. The hose shown is included in the kit.

The service manual shows how to do it. It's not that difficult. I did it myself with no problems, and according to my wife, I'm a caveman.

What level was the fuel when this occurred? That's another way to tell. If you fill up and runs fine it could be covering the holes. Could also be bad gas or a broken or breaking injector wire. I'd fill the tank and try to see how that works then it might narrow it down to that.
For a broken injector wire, the little pigtail that goes out from the top of the frame rail where they are secured to the injectors themselves, the leads can wiggle themselves until they partially break. Here's what the holes in fuel hose look like from rubbing.

well i bought the stuff today. that pic of the short hose? i hope? could be just me but i DO notice the pump sounds diff when first prim. kinda like a spraying sound. gonna limp it into work tomorrow and fix the next few days. worst that can happen is that ive done the fuel filter finally. i had a bout 60 miles on the tank when this happened.

So did you get the 61001-01 fuel filter kit, top gasket and ten screws? I'm still going to guess that's the issue. If not, at least you have part of the 50k service done anyway and then you can look at the injector wires, etc. to see what might be the problem

is there any way to check fuel pressure?
