PDA/Smartphones & Internet while touring?
NOTHING comes close to the iPhone 3G. The iPhone has set the bar for Smartphone/PDA's that others will play catch up for awhile.
There are only two things that would make the iPhone better in my opinion:
1) ability to tether my netbook
2) Verizon's network =)
I'll agree that AT&T's 3G network is nowhere near what they claim it to be, but it gets me by (for now).
If Verizon is ever able to offer/support the iPhone, I'd likely switch in a heartbeat.

I use the phone for personal and business needs. As a business tool it is pretty good. The Storm has a full web browser which means I can access anything on the web (including ****!).
In fact, I just got back from a 2800 mile trip on the bike and the Storm was very handy. It came preloaded with the basic version of Microsoft Office to Go (Word, Excel, Access, etc.), and this allowed me to view and edit documents while on the road. I synced my 3 business email accounts to the phone (along with 2 private email accounts). I was able to easily receive and work on documents while on the road. I literally reviewed and approved a Word document and 2 spreadsheets while stopped at a rest area outside of Amarillo, TX.
A big advantage is that you don't have to search for a Wi-Fi hotspot to receive email or access the web. On long trips I normally take my laptop anyway, but I also use it primarily while at the hotel. The Storm allowed me to do a lot of things without firing up the laptop.
