Aprrox. 7 quarts of oil w/labor for $39.95? And most of you use synthetic in at least one of the 3 holes......... Hmmmmmm, I'd like to see someone open that business.
I just bought a 09 Crossbones and the dealer is really hitting me up about getting that first service done. It will cost about $400.00 for the service which I can do on my own. Is my warranty invalid if I don't take it to the Harley dealer?
All the stuff they do I have been doing for years on 01 Indian, I just don't want to lose my warranty.
You must be talking about the idiots at Redding Harley! Wow, they keep raising the price of that first service too! They like to scare people too! No, it won't void your warranty, but also simple enough to do yourself. I also laugh when they say keep good records and receipts. Since when? Who says? You don't need receipts either! Is it in the owners manual? They have to prove what you did caused damage. Just use quality rated oils and be religious in your service. You take care of your ride, it will take care of you.
Fosters Harley in Tuscumbia, Alabama did my 10,000 mile service and i will go friday and get my 15,000 mile service done. syn 3 all 3 holes for $170.00. plus i need front and rear brake pads. they said if i bought the pads from them, no charge for labor to install them while they had it. i love these folks.
the dealer in huntsville,Al wants $550.00 for the same deal and charge me another hour of labor to put on the brakes. rip off.

no you don't have to keep them, but anything you can do to make it easier if it comes to it saves you the headache.
Standard engine oil change with chrome filter and dino oil $55, add $5 per qt for Syn-3.
1k and 5k services for twin cams, $200, additional for parts/labor as needed.
Shop rate $72hr
I look at it this way, I enjoy going to my dealership, have no issue with them changing my oil becuase I feel it's worth not having to worry about getting the oil/filter, messing up the garage if I spill some, then what to do with the oil after because we don't have a recycling program where I live and while they do it they look over the bike. To me it's worth every penny for a $55/$75 oil change.
The way I look at is this...if you cannot do the basic maintenance stuff yourself....maybe you ought to take up another hobby. Case in point...many moons ago, after having the engine "built" at the shop (1996 FLSTF), my rear base gasket starts seeping. Didn't I pay to have Genuine James base gaskets put in? 100 miles out of town...the rear head gasket lets loose. Limp the thing home on 1.47 cylinders. Get out the shop manual and tear the top end off the Evo. Look at the bases of the jugs and all you could see were the scrape marks form the wrench peeling off the HD paper gaskets. Send the jugs to the machin shop. He shaves .005 off both jugs.Nice, clean machined gasket surface. Put the whole thing back together with new gaskets......problem cured. $20 at the machine shop and the cost of Genuine James gaskets for the upper end. Any thoughts as to how much the dealer would have charged? The more work you do on your bike yourself, the better you know it and what the hell is what going on with it. Get shop manual. Take a look at it. Contrary to popular belief...it is not written in Cyrillic. I did the top end of that Evo for slightly more than you pay for an oil change. I have better things to do with my money. Speaking of which...just bought the Torrington bearing install tool (Jims) from another member and am going to do a cam swap on my TC. Never done one before. Ain't gonna stop me now. Learn to do the basics yourself.
just had my sg serviced at the dealers and never ask the price before hand never never agin i will learn to do it myself
That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Here in Ontario, I just laid out $295 for a service (basically oil change and inspection - whatever inspection means) and I supplied them with my Amsoil, because I don't approve of the watered down HD stuff they use. Basically paid $295 for 3/4 hour service. Good thing I had a gift certificate, bet you the dealer will never see a penny of mine in their service dept.
