Default Gear Driven Cams: Anybody Regret It?

There are lots of posts and threads about the benefit of gear driven cams. Is there anybody who has switched and had problems, or regretted the modification?

I am less than 2000 miles away from changing over, as the local dealer has agreed to change out cam shoes under extended warranty at 30K miles. My choice is to replace shoes (no cost), go to SE hydraulics (cost of kit), or go S&S/Andrews gears and cams (roughly $700 to $800 out of pocket).

I'd go with the SE Hydraulics personally. HD didn't design the TC to work with gear driven cams although it will work.

With the new HD hydraulics kit I don't see the need to go to gear drives anymore. Why chance a runout problem down the road? I bought the HD hydraulics kit and will be installing it shortly.

I can hear my cam drives on floating throttle, the thing is so loud the rest of the time you cant hear yourself think. No regrets at all. Even the chain system on the 09 didnt impress me, It was never hanging around for long.

How loud is your bike? If you run real quiet and want to hear your stereo then the gear train noise might be a problem. Everyone says the post 06 chains are fine for driving 585 grind or less cams.

On the other hand you can put gears in and know you never have to worry about it again.

As far as the Stealin Eagle kit goes, well, I have real problems giving the MOCO my money to fix something that should have been right in the first damn place. I would rather give my money to an indy who actually did some research and makes a product that they stand by.

Well you have a good price on the SE hydraulics..

I went to the S&S510 gear cams for a few reasons that you likely know.
Nice difference, especially for two up riding on my 06 SG I barely hear it running, mostly when you come to a stop. I would do it again for the extra imph for passing etc over the chain drive.

Maybe my 07 Heritage will go the same route later on.

If my info is correct the MOCO originally designed the TC88 as a 95 with gear cams but EPA regs shut that down back when.....

I'd do it again!

I own a Y2K road king classic.

No regrets going to S&S gear drive. Not overly loud and I actually like how it sounds. Can't hear it at all at speed. I've heard cams on Evo's make more noise.

I'd do it over in a heart beat. Had the work done at an indy - why give the MOFOCO more money to fix a poor design?

It also originally had an oil cooler but that never made it to production because they didn't want to sell an "oil-cooled" motorcycle.

I may be deaf but I can hardly hear mine. Then only when I give it a twist while sitting still. On the roll I don't know it's there.

And yes I would do it again. As a matter of fact I am bargaining with a guy for an anniversary edition RG. If I get it, a cam swap and gear drive is first on the list.

I love my gears. No more tensioner worries now gives me plenty of free time to concentrate on when my belt is gonna break.
