I did the mackinac on the way to Milwaukee in August.... Great ride... You gotta stay in the left lane and ride the grate... only way to do it.... Then stop on other side and get pics.....
If gonna ride the Yooper (UP) better have long johns handy for early morning and night riding .. Wife was from North MI and spent 27 years sailing the Great lakes and seen lots of cold nights on Lake Superior even in July...As far as riding the Grates not fond of it but have done it ... Crossed the Mac many many times...
Tunnel of trees is M119 on northwest side of the lower peninsula north of Petosky to Cross Village. Great ride along the shore of Lake Michigan with many expensive homes to be seen. Highly recommend riding it if your are in the area.
Don't know about the bridge yet, but I now live in Minnesota fater spending the first 56 years in La, the last 29 in Baton Rouge. Will be doing the Superior run this summer in July. What area of La are you from and hope you enjoy the ride.
The grated area of the bridge is one mile of steel grate. rest of the bridge is concrete. Keep your speed as steady as possible, RELAX!! bike will feel squirelly, but she will track straight. Holding the bars too tightly you will make the ride much more difficult, just relax and let it go..
If its really windy (over 25mph), I think I would wait a day...WInd comes up thru that grate and will scare the pants off ya...and if you aren't aware, and ready for it, you'll get pushed HARD..
if heights bother you focus on the horizon, if its too windy they wont let you cross or send a big truck to help block the wind .....its not that bad but is really breathtaking to look down under the grates to the base of the towers as well as up to the top...you can see for miles and is spectacular
