So if I'm reading you correctly, the factory ECM will not compensate for the increase in intake and exhaust from the parts that I have put on; making it necessary for some form of fuel management. Would a stage 1 download suffice or can I bypass that and just get a fuel manager? I don't want to pay for the Stage 1 download if I don't need it. The Dealer wants $225 just for the mapping......
I would highly recommend talking to Jamie at Fuel Moto and getting the PCV. They have great service and have custom maps already done for your bike. I had the same scenerio as you and paid for the Stage 1 and noticed little to no difference and the bike was hot as hell. Went ahead and installed true duals to get the heat away from the OL leg and then installed the PCV with auto tuner to tune the AFR where I wanted it for city and hwy riding.
I have called Fuel Moto on several occasions and they answered each of my questions and even walked me over the phone on how to adjust certain parameters of the PC map. I wouldn't waste my money on the Stage 1 download, spend the money on the Power Commander, just my 2cents.
Yeah you need something. I purchased a fuelpak from Vance and Hines. While I really like the ease of the Fuelpak if I could do it over again I would probably go through Jamie at Fuel Moto for a few reasons.
1. I have never heard a single complaint about the product.
2. The customer service is outstanding (I know first hand and didn't even make a purchase).
3. You have a ton of options for tweaking the set-up for your driving style.
4. If you do engine mods you can re-map the program while the fuelpak is pretty much only for air-in, air-out set-ups.
5. You can still fine tune any map by getting your bike dyno'd
Just installed Rinehart slipons and a SE air cleaner on my 09 Street Glide. No plans to do anything with the engine as yet (famous last words). Is is necessary to do a Stage 1 download? Should I be running an EFI management device like a PCV from Fuel Moto? Appreciate any thoughts you might have....
I did all these to my ride and the dealer told me that I would most likely be fine without the power commander , but and a big but they where not sure they would help me out if I had a issue unless they did the power commander and set it up. They did it and now stand behind the mods 100% so take it for what it is.
I was given information that the 2009 touring bikes with 2 O2 sensors would adjust to a degree with changes to the system such as new mufflers and that a change to the ECU was not necessary, however, it is recomended to get the best performance. The Stock HD ECU for 09 only alows to the bike to enrich to a point and not beyond that due to emissions controls. The more you change, such as a full exhaust system and Air filter, the more of a requirment it will be to add an aftermarket ECU modifier such as PC V.
You will realize more power gains if you add a tuning device (PC V, etc.) but the stock ECM will adjust to the mods you have made to date but only to the factory settings which are pretty lean for making good power. There is a mountain of info on this and you will do yourself a favor to research some of it. If it were mine I'd go with a PC V from Fuelmoto and get everything the stock motor has to offer.
Rinehart and D&D don't call for any additional tuning when mufflers or exhaust are added with a high flow A/C. D&D goes as far to tell you that they are not needed. American Classic motors e-bay ad list fuel ratio info for 09 with exhaust and A/C installed and the claim that a tuner is not needed and the only difference with a tuner would be a possible loss of fuel economy.
Cobra and Vance and Hines make no mention of not needing a tuner, but guess what they market their own tuners!!
QUOTE]Never seen anyone posting here that they melted a motor or fryed a piston. You always hear the warnings etc but what is reality? Or is it all hype?[/QUOTE]
Melted my crotch rocket for this exact thing wouldnt change air cleaner and pipes with out changing fuel management.
Due to being short on money I did the pipes, AC and stage 1 download instead of the dealer recommended super tuner. Runs like a scalded ape but could do better on gas milage. If you don't put the stage 1 dl or a fuel management system on it it will burn your *** up. I could hardly sit on my 06 UC in the summer because it was so hot. PCV is next for me. They did not have them out when I bought my 09 UC
