Default California rules question

What if a bike was purchased and is registered in Illinois, but kept and riden in California a lot of the time? Is registered in Illinois good enough? and what about California pollution control requirements? Would any of that effect me? (primary residence and drivers license is Illinois).

As long as you have an Illinois license, there's no law about "visiting" CA. Don't worry about it.

Unless you are here for more than ninety days i.e. employed here, then the DMV doesn't give a darn where your "primary residence" is. They want you to have a DL and pay the reg.

However your bike doesn't have to meet any of the CA emissions BS. As long as you are the original owner.

It has gotten somewhat better, there used to be a $300.00 import tax on non-CA vehicles. That one was over about 8 years ago and they had to refund the money.

How will they know all of that from a traffic stop?

On the first stop, it's certain that they won't. However, cops aren't stupid. If the local officer sees you riding by every day for 6 months straight, they'll be pretty sure you're not sightseeing while on vacation any more. If they choose to do something about it, you may have a problem.

It wouldn't be a problem at all. Snowbirds (seasonal residents) do it all the time.

Well I've worked on a couple of big construction projects that had workers coming in from out of state and watched the CHP sit across the street at quitting time and write tickets for it.

Just sayin'

BTW: I know it does work for the Snowbirds, I'm just not sure how...

Need more specifics to give you a proper answer.

1) what goal are you trying to accomplish?
2) are you in the military and stationed in CA?
3) how many miles are on the bike?
4) do you live here and have the bike registered to you in another state?
5) would you register it in CA if you were able to even though it doesn't have the CA CARB stuff?

there are different answers to all of the above questions but its hard to answer your question with out know more about what your objective or facts are. Kinda like asking how long a kite string is.

sorry for asking this question in this post but maybe you california riders can help me

I have an international model similar to ca models. my bike has a catalyst on the head pipes. I changed mufflers and i put the kerker fishtail I had on my previous bike. those pipes used to sound great on a 2006 but in my 2009 they sound very quiet. I cant change headers because I have to pass polution test every year.

this mufflers has the silent fiber inside burned so theres no material inside (they are supoussed to be louder)

do you ca riders who changed mufflers on 2009 bikes have the same problem? is there any way to have more sound keeping stock headers and the cat?

thank you
