Hi new to Harleys had an 1978 AMF xl1000 years ago swore I would never own another Harley . Over the years ive owned about every Japanese bike known . This summer bought 3 Harleys a 2009 883 Iron ( bolt on 550? cam ,race fueler ,sidewinder se intake, and baloney cut 2inch baffle rush pipes) leftover 2007 Buell XB12R Firebolt (88kit factory tunable ecm , wiseco forged 10.5 cr reverse dome piston, roller rockers , adj forged pushrods stage 3 heads ect ... NRHS full race set up. And a 1998 Road King .. intalling Jims 131ci with Baker 6 speed tranny . going to do chrome front end chrome engine ect also. Point is that Harley has come a LONG way from the rattle traps of AMF days and japanese owners should take anouther look at harleys .. it is great to be able to work an engine and customize a bike and make a bike your own . even if you look at it from a performance aspect . Even an yam r1 or ducati 1198 would be hard pressed to beat the Buell ( top end yes , bottom end Buell has them beat ) I love the Buell and was close to getting the Duc , glad I didnt . The Roadking is all my creation and not even the new Star line can give you the option of customizing the apperance AND the engine output harleys might not have the latest technology but after years or refinement they DO have the reliability to go a 100k. . so dont buy into the jap dealer telling you a Harley comes with tools for a reason . Those days have come and gone ... Just wanted to give perspective from a person who likes his harley not for the image or sound but for the bike itself . Thank You Jake
I had a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 and then a Honda VTX 1800 before I got my 05 FLHT. They were great bikes, but no more maintenance free or trouble free than a Harley. Stuff still broke, believe me. At the time, gthe metric bikes were a lot cheaper, but anymore, they're really not. Their prices have gone up, and quality stayed the same. Too much cheap looking stuff to have to replace, and not enough accessories out there for them. This goes for the Victory bikes too.
Dont get me wrong . The Japanese make great bikes , but they are not head and shoulders above the Harley, Victory or the European(Triumph, KTM,Aprilla, Ducati ect) makes anymore . All make great bikes in thier own right. Jake
And one more thing... I dont know about your area ,but in my area (outside Phila) the Jap multi dealers act as if they are doing you a favor in the parts and service departments after the sale( bike sale ) is Done . Jake
