sometimes the questions are almost frightening. a while back some guy asked, what size wrench fits the bolts for the sissy bar or something. damm, sorta hurts the brain
It will not start in gear unless you pull the clutch lever. For some reason, after my bars were changed, mine won't start unless it is in neutral.
for 07 and newer, exactly! if it is in gear, the starter will not engage unless you pull in the clutch.
for your problem, you probably broke the safety interlock switch. its just like the brake light switch on the right side, only its on your left. unless you changed levers as well and went with the 'old style' lever.
Proper starting procedure includes pulling in the clutch before hitting the starter button.
My 07 is not suppose to start without the clutch pulled in as is your 09 but it does.

your 07 will start without the clutch pulled in if the transmission is in gear? if so, you have a bad interlock circuit.

i don't think its too difficult, but then, i've never had to replace mine. could be one of those things that because of its small size is a total bitch to replace.
the first thing i would do though is to pull the clutch lever off and look in there with a good flashlight. if its broke, you'll see it. if it doesn't appear broken, you can use a small screwdriver to test the feel of it, does it push in and out like a switch should? if the switch passes the physical test, then you gotta break out the multimeter and wiring diagrams...... ooh, i hate that part
The interlock switches are rather new, my 03 FB had none, the 08 FB has at least one, the 09 service manual makes reference to one in the clutch assy and one for the jiffy stand (although I don't see it).
As far as I know they will all start in gear. I always make sure I'm in N before starting and pull in the clutch before hitting the start button...just a good practice to get into.

the clutch lever safety switch was introduced on the 07 models. though i must admit, i had not heard of the one for the jiffy stand. ugh..... don't mind the neutral so much, but not real excited about that one.
