Question Oil Cooler Preference??????

Well I put a oil temp gauge on my 07 RG over the winter, I knew when I did it I would be worrying about the temp. So here I am sometimes pushing 300 degrees and looking for some advice on a cooler. I am running amsoil synthetic, I ride a lot and I tend to ride a little hard sometimes and my oil temp starts pushing 300 degrees. With all the coolers available I am looking for some input from those of you who have installed one on your bike, Who makes the better product,Do they all have a thermostat, is there an ideal amount of rows i should be looking for, who has the best selection and price? Thanks in advance for your help guys......

If you're actually running 300F oil temps..... I wouldn't worry about a thermostat, I'd put 2 oil coolers on it - and mount them on the crash bar where they really get some air!

I was being a little silly

230 - 240 is (apparently) normal for a TC. I ride me old Evo stuff where 100F over ambient is normal....

Seriously, I've run 3 different designs of coolers over the years. Mounting has the biggest effect on of the efficiency of any design. Mounted at the bottom of the downtube (under voltage regulator) or at the top of the tubes (somewhat behind the fender) you can expect a 10% reduction in oil temps. The same cooler mounted on the crashbar where it's really out in the wind will give you 15% or a little better.

I'm not a Twin Cam guy, so maybe some of the regulars can give you some better options on styles / brands...

Stay cool

Damn guy it's not even hot in Utah yet. I live right above you in Idaho and I use Harleys cooler, I don't have a temp gauge so I can't tell you what exactly mines doing, but I can't imagine that it's anywhere near that hot.
What ever you decide on you need a thermostat for when it's cooler outside, without it you can end up with a bunch of slug or unevaperated water in the oil.

I have the same bike and I also like to ride hard. I had the gauge before I installed the cooler. Temps were from 230 to 260. One time I pegged the McEwen gauge at over 300. That's when I knew a cooler was NOT an option. I installed the HD premium cooler with the chrome cover. Temps are now at 180 to 190 and max at 230 in traffic.

FACT - ALL TC96 MOTORS SHOULD HAVE A COOLER.

Flame away guys.
