There really is not that much difference between the SG and UC. All the SG is a stripped down UC. Same frame, motor, fairing, bags, ect..... What is the style you are looking for. Do you want the almighty cruiser, or a sporty looking lowered cruiser. The issue that the SG had were not model specific. It was more of a problem the lean running conditions do to the new EPA standards, all of which were resolved. So you decide, do you want the caddy, or the sportier cruiser. Any way you go you will have a great bike.
A glide is a glide is a glide. The increased issues with the 2006 SG is probably ONLY because it is the biggest selling bike in the 06' glide lineup. The dealers around me can't keep them in stock. If 10 glides are sold, 9 SG's and an Ultra, and they all have fuel injector issues, then 9 SG's have issues. It's simple. The SG has the lowering shocks, less bling, and a different seat than the UC. It's all up to you. I would take one of each for a spin and see which feels better to you.
If I would again, I would get the UC. I have the SG, and LOVE IT....but I wish I had the tour pack (which I can get for EXTRA $$), and I wish I had lower fairings (which I can get for EXTRA $$)...It's better to have and not need, than need and not have. You can always take the pak off when you want too.
I hate all the UC colors (except for black...too many combo colors for my taste) You can lower the windshield, and WAAAM you got a SG
You can buy an Ultra strip it and lower it cheaper than you could get a SG and add all the stuff the Ultra has.
Ultra additions=Lower Fairings, Cruise Control, CB Radio Tourpack with 4 speaker 80 watt stereo system, passanger, rider innercom, and probably some more stuff.
Take a look at Ultrageezerglide's Pearl White Ultra that he has stripped. Once the tour pack is removed and a short windshield is installed there is not much difference.
Here is my EG Classic with and without the tourpack.
