Default high idle

Picked up my first Harley on Wed. used 2009 E.G. standard with 411 miles on it. Maiden voyage on Saturday up thru the avocado groves into Oceanside side with 5 others along with my wife riding along.
About 140 miles into trip my idle kicked up to approx. 1200-1400 rpm's sometimes to 1800 I would back throttle and would decrease to about 9000 but thats it. We stopped at Cooks Corner for a refreshment then headed home and all seemed o.k.
Any ideas.
Thanks, Jeff

Mine idles high sometimes I twist the throttle forward and it goes back down I think I need to grease the flb so it will return to idle like it is supposed to. I saw another thread here about this I will need to do a search. Mine idles around 1000

Make sure you dont kill the motor with your hand on throttle. I was told if its twisted any amount when you kill motor it messes up the zero setting on the electronic throttles and can cause the high idle. Most of the time when you kill it again it will reset to stock zero setting.
Dunno if this is true or not but just wanted to pass the info

On the '08's, the fix is simple -- Turn on the ignition (don't start the bike) long enough for the radio to kick in, shut it off long enough for the security blink.

Do that four times.

On '09's, I have no idea if that still holds.

Thanks for the tip. I just got back from a day trip and on the way back I noticed my idle was around 1500 and stops. Don't know what I did to cause it. I've only had the bike a week.
Followed your directions and she purrs at 950 again.
What caused the spike

Weird quirk with the throttle by wire. It memorizes the last speed as idle. If you shut the bike off with any throttle input, it remembers that as your idle speed. Just make sure when you shut the bike off, it has returned to normal idles and you are not accidentally giving it any throttle and all will be fine. Turning the ignition on and off 4 times, resets the throttle position an idle in the ecm. It's how new throttle sensors are calibrated.

Keep in mind too that since it's fuel injected, the ecm may increase the idle speed on start up since you don't have a choke. Some people will confuse this with a throttle by wire issue. It's just the ecm helping to warm up the bike. When the bike gets warm, it will return to normal.

always turn off your machine when the throttle is untouched. otherwise the ecm remembers the rpm's it was running when you killed the motor. when it's cold out, like in winter they can, like the previous poster mentioned, activate a simulated choke condition raising the idle till it warms up.

u can also avoid this by shutting it off with the main switch and not the kill switch .

Just remember when you park it let the idle come down and then shut it off that is all you have to do. But as mentioned above that is how you reset the high idle if it does it again.

Two points also -

A) From what I understand, there's a firmware update that corrects the problem. But I've heard negative things about getting the update.

B) Occasionally, it's just going to happen. Say you start the bike and just want to let it run for a minute so you can check the fluids - If it didn't warm up enough to go down to the normal idle speed, you're going to have to go through the routine.

That said, it's an easy enough routine...
