Just found out something over the weekend at my local Harley dealers service department I thought I would pass on to my fellow bagger riders in case you all discover on your bikes what I did recently.
I live in a warm weather climate, and now it's getting really hot as it soon will in most parts of our country. When I cleaned my bike last week, I noticed what I thought was oil or brake fluid leaking out from a screw which holds the brake lines under the steering post, and this screw is connected to the bar between the two from forks. I ride over to the Harley dealer and talk to the service manager who I know. The service manager walked outside took one look at my bike as say "grease." I say what? She says grease. In the summer as the temperature gets hotter, the grease lubricating the steering post breaks down and turns into a liquid. Well that liquid has to go somewhere, and the lowest point is that screw. If you turn your handlebars to the extreme left, and reach into that connecting bar you should find a whole lot of grease; I did. Guess I didn't feel this liquifying grease last summer.
Any of you other bagger riders out there experience this occurance? Again, the dealer is saying to me this is normal. If this is normal, then my hope is to save someone out there from a ride to their local dealer when they should be out riding an amazing road somewhere.
It gets worse. There will be grease down your primary cover, on your horn, and all over your engine guard. I had mine for two days and noticed it and started going apes**t because the bike was two days old and I thought it was leaking break fluid. Don't worry though. The service guy I deal with said it should only last about7,000 mile then it would stop. Just in time for the 10,000 mile service. Then it starts all over again.
I live just a few miles South of you and I saw it on my 06 after they greased the neck bearing it was leaking like a crack ho's you know what. On my 09 no leak yet but I haven't had the neck greased yet.
I was also told this is normal. My tech laughed and said "you would think they could design something better". Its because of the excess grease on the head bearing like others have said. I just took a paper towel and wiped the excess off and no more issue.
