Do you have an idea WHY this happened?

Motors generally don't explode.

This one did. Nice big raggedy hole in the area at the bottom of cam cover and engine case. Guys behind got wacked with little pieces and oil. Sure it didnt literaly "explode" but when you punch a nice big hole and are droppin little pieces, parts and oil all over the road and your buddies I think you can describe it as such. This happened about 70 MPH on the PA Turnpike. Luckily it didnt lock up.
My buddies think the oil pump went. Said he smelled something funny but thought it was brakes, diesel fumes etc. from the trucks.

That's amazing. Can't imagine what that would feel like. Lucky your pal wasn't hurt either. Guess you have to think quick, pull the clutch in and pull over before the rear locks up? Hope he can post some pics and that the MoCo does right by him.

Bummer, but it's a good sign the dealer gave him a loaner, at least they care about him as a customer.

If it were my bike, I'd probably want a new engine too. But it raises a good question: How many miles on your bike before a rebuild is acceptable? The warranty doesn't state that if you ever have a problem that you'll get a new engine. It simply states they'll fix it. Of course if the bike only had a few miles on it most of us would want a new engine. But how many miles would you have to have on the bike before you'd accept a rebuild? Would it be 1000, 3000, 5000?

It's pretty obvious the rod let go as it punched the side out of the case. He'll get a different motor, whether it's new, as it should be, or a reman remains to be seen. Make SURE they pull the oil pan and all the plumbing for a good cleaning or the chances of it happening again from shards in the oiling system gets pretty likely.

Interesting thread. Everyone says they want a new engine.

It was a new engine that exploded!!!!

Here's a choice. Rebuilt 103 (service manager at my dealer says the 110 has issues) or brand new 96????
