Default Head porting advice.

I have a 2001 Road King with fuel injection. I had the dealer install the SE 95" kit with the SE cam, 203 I believe came with their kit. The bike has the SE air cleaner and SE slip-ons. The 95" kit was installed in the fall of '06. Don't start flaming me for the SE build, I know better now.

I have not been real happy with the way the bike has run since. I lost (butt dyno, no real loss in HP or TQ) bottom end power and the dyno chart had a drop off in between 2500 - 3000 rpms.

Last year I had a PC III installed and dyno tuned the bike at my INDY. It helped quite a bit and got rid of the dip on the dyno chart, but the bike still does not get up and go the way I would like. It still feels soft on the bottom end and I am below 90 max HP and Torque.

I am doing a gear drive conversion in the next few weeks and will be putting the HQ 34 cams in during the conversion. I am hoping that will help a little with the bottom end.

My question is: Would you recommend head porting while I am doing this conversion and how much should I expect to spend? Is there anything else I should be doing at the same time? I was reading a bit about head gaskets to increase compression. Should I ask my Indy about that also?

Any advice would be appreciated. I have a chunk of cash into this motor and I would expect it be better.

Thanks.

Head work will make a differance if done correctly.Expect to pay $500-$900.A 2-1 pipe will also help.
There is a lot of info here if the search feature is working.

Thanks. I would prefer to keep two pipes, the 2 - 1 look is not for me. I know that would help, but I was actually thinking about the V&H dresser duals and keep my slip ons.

If you've got the money available, heads from HQ along with those 0034 cams will be great. Its my plan to add jugs/pistons/heads this winter, i already have the 0034 cam installed and love it!

thanks for the feedback on the cams. Spoke with my INDY today and he recommended HQ 39 cams and a spring kit if we were pulling the heads anyway. He said that cam should really wake up the bike with the 95" kit. So now I am thinking gear drive conversion, HQ 39 cam, and porting heads. When will it ever end?

No offense to your indy but a stock compression 95" would be over-cammed with the HQ-0039 cams. Even if you did a street port on your heads it will be over-cammed.

Frankly, if you are considering HQ cams (I have HQ-0034's in my '04 EG 88" otherwise stock motor) contact Kevin at HQ; better still, visit their website and use their "cam selector" feature and then call Kevin if you have any questions.

Good luck with your project.

thanks for the info pingman. I will get with my indy Monday and make sure we are not putting in too much cam. I will ask him to call HQ and get a recomendation.

I was just looking on their website and it says the 39 cam is for 95" ported motors and will work 9.5 to 10.?, My SE kit should be close to a 9.5 compression, right? maybe not.

I am on cam, build information overload at this point.

www.bigboyzheadporting.com

The 203 cam is OK, but they need a little compression to really start to work good. Have your heads ported/polished then also have them CCed and milled to bring the compression up a bit............cost you about $395 + shipping.

Give Bean a call......he'll take care of you.
