Default Engine light question to settle argument.

Myself and a buddy have an argument. When I start my 04 EGC it shows a light with the engine on it. I start it when it goes off. My buddy has an 06 Ultra and says that I don't have to wait for the light to go off to start it with out consequences. Who is wrong or right and what have you heard pertaining to this.

It's OK to start it before the light goes out as long as the fuel pump has attained pressure (you'll hear it).

I don't know, but I have been told by more than one dealer that you should wait. It really seems a silly argument. Just wait for the damn light to go off. I have a Dodge Diesel pickup. You are supposed to wait until the glow plug light goes out before starting it. Have I started it without waiting? Yes. Has it crumbled into the dirt because I did? No. But I still make it my practice to wait for it to go out. Same with my ultra.

What's the hurry, it only takes a few seconds.

I asked him what does 10 seconds matter!!!!!!! I told him that waiting that 10 seconds just means that our beers are going to be colder because they are closer to the bottom of the cooler!!!!

According to my dealer tech, you should wait until it goes out, every time.

Not only is the fuel pump priming, but also the EFM is doing a self check.

I had a 2000 RKC that would kick a code if I didn't wait for the light to go off before I hit the starter button. Then I would have to take it to a friend of mine that had a HD Scanalyzer to clear the code so the light wouldn't stay on. I haven't had the problem with my '08. Maybe I just got in the habit of not being in such a hurry or maybe something changed since my 2000. Regardless I think if I were you I'd wait 'til the light went out.

Yeah, I have been told about the ECM self check. If you listen carefully you can head the throttle body move, clicking into 2 different positions and calibrating itself. Do it with the air cleaner off and you will see what i mean.
