Default Clutch Spring Question

I recently installed a SE Performance clutch on my 2008 SG, just under 10,000 miles. When I removed the spring (diagram) I noticed that there was a good layer of very find metal residue on the pressure plate where the outer edge of the clutch spring comes in contact with it. This is my first clutch replacement and don't know if this is normal. It seems excessive to me. When I drained the primary there did not seem to be as much fluid as I added, 45oz. Is this amount of wear normal, or could it be do to a lack of fluid?

Can't comment on the residue but, did you pull the outer primary or change the spring through the derby cover? If you did it through the derby, and then added 45 ounces, you added too much. 38 ounces wet, 45 dry if I recall.

On second thought...I think you'd have had to remove the outer to do it so never mind!

Sounds like normal wear and tear.
The spring could be a little magnetic which will attract the the ferrous wear material.
The only fluid loss would be if there is a leak.

Yes, I did remove the outer primary as per the service manual. The clutch spring on the 2008 will not fit through the derby cover. I check just in case I need to replace the spring in the future.

That's good to know. A magnetic affect did come to mind when I was looking at it. The drain plug magnet was coved with the residue also.

There where no leaks. I am just wondering if the correct amount was not added at last change.

For the last year I have been doing all my own service, and it's going to stay that way.

Changing out your clutch at 10K, did you notice some thing wrong with the way it was shifting or just wanted to put a higher performance set up in it?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the correct amount of primary oil 32 oz. ? Seems to be the amount the Service Manual calls for. And a small amount of metal residue is normal with an oil bath clutch. If you use ATF you can easily afford to change it every service interval.

Newer TC's take 38 ounces (wet).

Bert, I'd like to know your impressions once you get the spring installed--specifically the added lever pressure required. I have a stock TC96 with SE255 cams and have noticed that one other person with this configuration has had trouble with clutch slippage, although I have not...yet. If I ever have to replace it, I'd like to know about the side effects, like a stiffer clutch lever.

I'd also like to clarify whether or not the spring will fit inside the Derby hole. Hey Skydoc, exactly what do you mean by "finesse"? That sounds a little like "shoehorn" or "convince" (like using hammers and pry bars).
