My .02 is that Stage 1 is just part of the cost of buying a new bike these days. It is the best bang for the buck that you will ever get for as long as you own your bike. You will reduce heat, get increased performance, and get much better sound.
Looks might be a small factor, but lets face it. The main reason you want the slip-ons is to get better sound. Others can flame me all they want but the fact of the matter is that sound is a pure ego thing. Some might claim that loud pipes are for safety, but the bottom line is that everyone wants their bike to sound good to them and sound good to anyone that hears their bike. I definitely am guilty as charged and maybe worse than others.
I guess my point is that it might be best to wait for all the benefits that go along with a Stage 1. A nice set of slip-ons will cost you $300 to $600. Or you can get a full Stage 1 set-up for as little as as $700
