Take digital photos of your bike with the outer fairing removed so you can see how everything is routed. Mark everything with tape as you unhook it so you won't have any doubts that you're plugging something in the correct place. Take your time, it's not a difficult job, just time consuming.

Remember how and what position u take the ignition switch out in. If you get it out of wack it can be hard to line back up dont ask me how I know.

Mine hasnt been right since the big crash although i got it better than when i had to force everything together to get the screws in.. I didnt do the repairs but im getting it right ! Take your time and its an easy job..

Put your parts in plastic bags and mark them. It makes assembly go a lot faster when you're not guessing which screw goes where. It took me 1-1/2 hours to disassemble mine, and only 1 hour to put it back together.

Also, if you have the service manual, xerox the pages for removal of the different components. You'll find that the process is not sequential in the service manual. There's several sections all over the book that you'll need to follow. I found it easier having copies to flip through than trying to hold the manual open while doing the work.

The toughest part is the ignition switch, and after doing that twice now it's a 30 second procedure once you get the hang of it.

Definitely take photos as mentioned. I had mine painted so there was a week the bike sat apart. I have a good memory so didn't need them, but it's nice just in case.

Dozens of HDF'ers (myself included) have done it and there are a ton of posts on the topic. There's an excellent "search" function to help you find them.

You have a nice bike; spend the $$$ for the HD Service Manual for your bike--it has an excellent step-by-step procedure described in it. You'll need to remove the clutch cable and throttle/idel cables. Excellent descriptions of those proceduress as well.

Good luck with your project.

Just done mine 2 in the past 4 months and like everyone else says, get the Owners Manual and it is a breese if you take photos and your time!! Once you have done it and look back, it ain't that hard. Just use masking tape on each piece of wiring coming apart (1-1, 2-2, 3-30 etc...) and it all goes back easy. One thing to make sure of!!! Be damned sure to not have any wiring laying/bent/pinched over or against a piece of metal that could vibrate/saw its way into the center and short it out!!! Don't ask me how I know this one!!! Fuses aren't cheaper than headaches!!!!!!!!

Did it myself and at the same time changed out the handlebars with the wiring routed internally. The job itself did not take long up until the very end. The ignition switch is tricky to re-install if you get it out of alignment as I did. Spend the money and get the alignment tool they describe in the service manual.

find a buddy with a bike like yours.... bribe him to park his bike next to yours... take off his outer fairing and use it to look at while your put yours back together... IF you can do this... much better than pictures..
