Default Touch up paint tips please

Last week I did the unthinkable. Yep, chipped the paint on my new SG. Small area on the rear fender maybe 1/8 inch in diameter. I've gotten over it and I'm out of Kleenex so now on to touching it up. Bought the touch up kit which includes a bottle of basecoat and one of topcoat. Before I begin I'd like to get some tips from the forum. Should I apply several coats of base followed by several coats of top? OR, apply a layer or basecoat then topcoat, dry and repeat? Any tips you can give would be appreciated. I figure worse case I will have the fender repainted but really don't want to do that just yet and want to see how the touch up paint will look first. Thanks in advance.

topcoat last no matter how many basecoats you put on...do the basecoat, see how it looks if you are not satisfied add some...ar you sanding any before the topcoat...any experience in sanding ???? make sure the area is very, very clean before you start...Go to a junk yard and ask them for a piece for bent fender with the same color to practice on....

I had a small gouge in my right bag. I put a few coats of base to level it out and then 1 clear. I still know its there and if you look closely you can tell but it isn't bad...

Basically just use touch up sparing and lightly unless someone is super critical looking at your Bike will never see it ... And if they do just say a badge of honor riding it ...

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I don't really care how it looks I just want to prevent any rust or corrosion. I have the stealth luggage rack (sweet looking chrome rack!) that will pretty much cover my ding up anyway. Again I appreciate the tips. Safe rides to all.
