I am going to Melbourne Australia for 6 months. Anybody on this site from Australia. I want to rent a bike while in Australia and do some riding. Want to find out where to go.
I live in the US, but I have been through AUS on a bike. The coolest ride is the Outback near Uluru - crazy scenery and no speed limits. I rented a bike in Alice Springs and made the five hour trip to the Rock. Pretty far from Melbourne though. Melbourne is a tough city to ride in if you are from the US - You are already driving on the wrong side of the road, and then because of the trolleys you have to make right turns from the far LEFT lane. And if I remember correctly there's something about making the turn AFTER the light turns red! My advice would be to get out of the city quick and head for The Great Ocean Road. It's similar to the Pacific Cost Highway. Spend a day or two and end up in Adelaide which is nice scenic wine country.
I was visiting Melbourne last month. It's late Fall in Melbourne right now. The weather can be rainy & cool. Head up north of Brisbane along the coast. Beautiful sweepers & warmer weather along Bruce Highway. I would not suggest renting a bike or car in Melbourne, parking ($65 overtime parking ticket) and traffic is terrible. You can use public transit in the cities and save the bike travel for the open road. I was in a rental car most of my visit, wishing I was on my EG. Oh, don't ride at night. The roads are covered with all the creatures you see on the Nature channel. Cheers!

Would highly reccommend the Great Ocean Road. Watch out for traffic, and it is really neat to see some of the 'critters" they got running around there. I did alot of riding in the NT in the Outback Darwin to Kathrine, Kathrine to Alice Springs. Saw things that make you say WTF and others that make you say Wow!!! Enjoy your trip and take lots of pictures
I am in Melbourne and everybody is correct about the traffic. It is a lot of traffic and they drive on the other side of the road. I will get outside of the city to rent a bike.
