Lower End rattle when not under load
I have a 99 flht with 82000 miles it has just started making a rattle noise on the lower end when I am not under load. When cruising at lower rpm around 2000-2800 it rattles at 3000 it doesnt. I just had another 10000 service and all was good except this new problem and I wonder if this could be a cam issue or a rod bearing . I am unsure of the cam set up since the bike had 20000 miles when I bought it and I have maintained it. has anyone had the same problem ? I dont want to quit riding untill the winter and all else runs great .

Pull the cam cover and get a look at those cam chain tensioners. They make quite a bit of noise when they go. You don't want your oil pump eating all that nylon and circulating it thru the motor. If the tensioners are ok, I'd let a shop have a look, unless you feel comfortable opening up the engine.

geoff is right, check those cam chain tensioners, at that mileage they're bound to need replacing. might also want to check your primary chain tensioner as well. that may also need replacing, and if so there is an easy fix that works great. it's the newer style that you don't have to adjust, it's self adjusting. if you have to do the cam chain tensioners there are three basic ways you can go.. first is go with stock early twin cam tensioners. not advised. second would be the improved new style chain and tensioners, and third being gear drive cams. those are the available options that i can think of. lots of miles on those cam chain tentsioners, and bound to be worn down to nothing.

Thanks for the advice , I will check those tensioners out. Sounds like i dont want to ride if they are going out and if I am lucky enough for that to be the problem a failrly easy fix.

I had a noise like that and it turned out to be sheared off stator bolts. The stator was just floating around in there. Not a real common problem, I only know of one other over the years and that was on an old shovelhead flh.
