Default Inner Primary Seal Leaking Question

My 08 Ultra was diagnosed with an inner primary seal leak. It happens only once in a while, about the size of a quarter on the garage floor. I have a 1,500 mile trip coming up. Is it critical this be fixed immediately or can I wait until returning? The dealer is fixing under warranty and says he wants to replace all inner primary seals and full clutch adjustment. I'd appreciate comments of you who handle a wrench pretty well.

I have the same issue. The main shaft (?) seal has been replaced twice in 24K miles (actually in the last 12K). I now get a small leak after running at speeds over 60-65-70 ish. Since it's not major, at the moment, and I'm nornally in the 35-55 zone, I'll leave it be for now.

How much fluid gets on your hands after rubbing behind the Primary around the Drain Plug?

If its not leaking any more than that I wouldnt consider it an emergency. Im the type of guy that would fix it before I went on the trip if possible though. JMO I would make sure that it is a max capacity before leaving if you dont fix it first if I were you.

I realize I'm not clear on these primary seals. Do they seal a shaft or are they sealing a case,or housing of some sort? Is this inherent in these motors (my first Harley)? If this wasn't covered by warranty, how much would this type repair cost?

They have more than one seal. They have a starter shaft seal and a big rubber o-ring that seals it to the motor and a quad seal that seals the tranny. You dont want to have to pay to fix what all could go wrong if you ran it dry. Maintenance is much cheaper than repairs.

You might want to be ready to check the fluid level a couple of times during your trip. Mine needs a 3/16 hex to pull the cover but that may not be what you need. You would have to have someone support the bike upright. Peace of mind thing.
