Question CB Radio Static

Lately I have been having periods (20 minutes or so) of static when using my CB. I actaully use the CB on most rides and yesterday had 3 or 4 occasions when the static lasted for many (many) minutes. I usually have my squelch set at around 3 bars, and when this happens I have to move it up to 8 or 9 or more (about 3/4 of the way). Course, I can't hear anything then (might as well turn it off).

This trip I looked for power lines, stations, cell phone towers ... NOTHING around ... (maybe gremlins)

Curious what else may cause this static?

Anyone have any ideas (other than squelch settings).

thanks for any help!

Hi, A certain amount of static (aka 'hash') is inherent in CB's - hence the provision of the squelch, which increases the threshold (the height of the wall, if you like) that the hash has to break through. Don't only look for external sources - interference from your own machine can be (and often is) a significant factor. So why does it vary? Well, lots of reasons - that's the joy of radio communications! For instnce, if the hash gets worse on long straight stretches o road it might simply be that you are cruising at higher revs which will create more hash. What are the circumstances when the hash gets worse? What is your general CB performance like? Albion.
