Maybe it's based on the system's perceived rate of fuel consumption prior to the fill up. If you were sucking fuel before, it might assuming that you'll continue to do so. Sometimes mine will creep back up as I ride because I'm consuming fuel more slowly than the system had anticipated.

Like everyone else my 09 EGC gas meter does the same. Says E but with almost 3 gallons left. I have yet to see the idiot light come on. So I'm wondering does it work? I mentioned this to the dealer and they said the float can be adjusted at the service. I will have them look at it then. In the mean-time I watch the trip meter and my type of riding conditions during that tank.

That kind of makes sense.

My Ultra seems to be pretty close. When the light comes on it says I have around 30 miles left. When I fill up it normaly takes 4.5 to 5 gal. I have had the bike for about 3 weeks and have 2k miles on it and it has been getting around 38 mpg.

When mine says 40 the light comes on & the countdown begins. It'll drop to 10 then say LO within 10 miles. Kinda makes me long for the days when the indication was a sputtering motor, fumbling for the petcock to switch to reserve before the damn thing died, then looking for the nearest gas station.

That's exactly what mine does. I, however, have no such longings for the switch to "reserve". All too often happened at high speeds on the highway. Also, being somewhat absent minded I would sometimes forget to turn the petcock back to "on", and once got stranded about a half mile from a gas station. It was almost much worse, but I realized I hadn't fueled up, turned around and headed back to town. I'll take a self re-setting countdown, thank you.

When my counter gets to 10 it says Lo. Once when it said Lo I set the tripmeter and rode 12 miles before I got to a gas station. I filled up with 5.75 gal. I figured I could have ridden about 10 more miles before it went completely dry but I wasn't going to find out the hard way.

My 09 RK fuel left indicator has been off since I bought the bike new. Just had it in for the 1000 mile service and told service manager what it was doing. As of now with just a little over 1000 miles on it, shes getting around 38mpg. The count-down starts to come on at around 140 miles driven, and today I rode it till the thing showed L no miles left but when I filled up it only took 4.2 gallons to fill it. That is way off. Had 166.1 on the trip meter when I filled it. Thats about 39 mpg and basically still had 1.8 gallons of fuel remaining. The service manager said he called another MOCO tech line and told me to document what it was doing and save my fuel reciepts and if the problem presists they would look into fixin it.

I think the fuel remaining computer is very accurate. I usually take an odometer "hack" when I get down to the last gallon or so. My low fuel light usually comes on at about a gallon remaining. The math usually jives with the remaining calculation within a couple miles. I've run it down to LO numerous times. Ditto on the LO reading after 10 miles remaining. The most I've ever put in it was 6.127 gallons. I've put a shade over 6 gallons in a couple times. This is afer topping off the tank to the filler neck. The gas gauge is worthless just like the older bikes. I never look at it. I always look at the fuel remaining. I also zero out my "B" odometer every time I fill up. So I have both fuel used and remaining to get a real good idea of what's going on.
