Dropped the bike off at the dealer today to look at my "mystery" sound. I had stopped by the dealer that is closer to my house a few weeks ago and they assured me the noise was normal since I was running mobil 1, but they would tear it down but said that "harley doesn't pay for fishing expeditions". I let it go since I was going to have it serviced in a couple of days, and thought lets see if new fluids quiet it down some. Well since then the sound has been getting louder, yesterday when I got to work it was so loud you could hear it over the pipes. I went to the dealer I bought it from and was expecting the same blow off. I asked them to have a listen and a tech went out with me. I showed him, although it wasn't as bad as it was yesterday, and he didn't seem to think it was much. He took me over to a rental and started it up and showed me the sound it had. It had some similarities, but was much deeper and softer. I said that was probably closer to mine up until a couple of months ago but now its much different. He said they were close in milage, and look at the rental ODO, and it said 2421, WHOA! I have over 18,000, not 1800!! His tune seemed to change real fast! Not that he wasn't sympathetic to my dilemma before, but now he started rolling off all kinds of potential problems. He asked when could I bring it in to have a look? I said, well I'm here now just keep it and I'll check with ya tomorrow. He said that if they didn't find anything they would still come up with some issue to write it off under warranty. Now that right there is the reason I buy from them instead of the one five minutes from my house! That is what I call customer service.

UPDATE:

dealer called and said that they had found a magnet had come loose from the stator and was causing the problem sound I was hearing.

Lightbulb Me too

My Inner Primary Bearing went out around 32000 miles too. A small chip or two broke loose from the rollers and galled the race. It sounded like a hollow rolling noise when in neutral. It went away under load. The warranty expired the month before, but I have the 3 year extended warranty on it, so ....Just $50 repair.
