Now that I think about it, I may have heard of this problem. The shaft that goes through the inner primary to the linkage may be gummed up and not letting the shifter release after you downshift. Clean it up and lube it.
That sounds very possible. When I down shift to 5th it feels like it just sits in the down position and dosen't spring back. I'm guessing when things get warm/hot, it's not as (gummy?). I'll check that before I call the dealer.

I had a spring brake on my old 88 heritage. The shifter would not return to the "center". I had to lift the shifter with my toe to tap the heal before I could down shift down shift.

Could be as simple as greasing the center shaft where your shift levers attach. I have had this happen to me, and it was the cause. Lack of grease....

changing gears up or down at too low rpms is not good IMHO

that makes me wonder if there isn't a shifter fork alignment problem. i don't know if the newer transmissions still use such a part, but it might be worth asking about.

Just wondering what you found out about your down shifting problem. My 2010 SG was doing this yesterday..... it's only 4 days old and has less than 200 miles on it.

Thanks

Mine was due to gunk build up over time on the shifter shaft rod. Probably not what you are experiencing. I do remember reading that if your oil level was too low in your primary it could cause shifting problems.

I have always had to blip the throttle a little when downshifting especially when coming to a stop. By the way, After watching Roads Avatar I can't downshift AT ALL!!!!

Are you having problems upshifting aswell? I was experincing both and it turn out to be the carrier bearing on the shift drum cocked on an angle. I had to bring it to a couple of places before they could diagnois it.
