Smile Outstanding Dealer Service

The following letter tells the story of outstanding service I received after breaking down on my way to Sturgis on July 31st. I felt the moco should be made aware of how their dealers took care of me.

On July 31, 2009 I left Roseburg OR. enroute to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. This was my first trip to the rally. I was riding my 2009 Ultra Classic, VIN#1HD1FC189Y610412. When I turned onto Interstate 84 heading east I began to notice the steering felt different. The further I went, the worse the road seemed to feel. Initially I thought it was the road surface but soon realized there was definitely something wrong with the front end of my motorcycle. I arrived in Biggs Junction, OR. and could go no further. Inspection of the front wheel showed the dust cover on my right front bearing was moved away from the bearing and I could see there were missing ball bearings.
I began to call several Harley Davidson dealers in an attempt to locate a dealer who had the necessary parts to fix my bike. Kennewick WA Harley Davidson was very helpful but said they didn’t have the parts and suggested the fastest way to get back on the road was to take the bike to Latus Motors near Portland. I called Latus Motors who told me they had one of the necessary bearings but not the left side ABS bearing. As it was late in the afternoon on a Friday it was too late to overnight the parts and I wouldn’t be able to get on the road until Tuesday the 4th. I resigned myself to the fact I wasn’t going to make the rally this year.
I then called Road America for roadside assistance in towing my motorcycle back to Latus Motors, 110 miles away. I explained my problem to the associate and because I had the deluxe coverage she approved my tow back to the Portland area without cost. A tow truck from No Limits Towing arrived within the promised time. The driver and owner, Micah Lawson, was extremely courteous and professional in ensuring my motorcycle was secured on the flatbed and that there would be no damage caused from any of the straps used.
I arrived at Latus Motors after 6pm and the service department was due to close at 7pm. I met with the Service Adviser, Teresa Gross, who wrote up the required paperwork and asked a technician to take a look at my front wheel. Jason Bonn and Bobby Haney examined the front bearings and said there must be some way to get me on the road without waiting until Tuesday. They left for a short time and returned saying there was some good news and some bad news. The good news was that they had one of the bearings in stock and the bad news was they didn’t have the abs bearing. They then told me they located the abs bearing at Paradise Harley Davidson in Tigard. They had more good news when they said the parts person at Paradise would stay there until one of them could get over there to pick up the bearing. Teresa then told me they would stay as late as it took to get me back on the road. The parts department at Paradise closed at 6pm. Bobby Haney rode there in Friday rush hour traffic and made it back in about 45 minutes, and it was now a little before 8pm. Shortly thereafter I was back on the road with all the work covered under warranty.
As it was so late, and the 100 plus degree heat had taken its toll I decided to spend the night in the Oxford Suites that is across the street from Latus Motors. The clerk said they had a room available and quoted me a price. I told her I had just been at Latus Motors and had my bike fixed. She then told me they give Latus customers a discount and gave me a price almost $30.00 less than previously quoted. The way this entire experience had gone I felt as if I should have purchased a lottery ticket.
Everyone I dealt with in this adventure, from the various HD dealers, Road America, No Limits Towing and the hotel, was more helpful, friendly and professional than I could have ever expected. The personnel at Latus Motors went above and beyond what could have been expected. The only thing that was requested of me by Teresa Gross the Service Adviser, was that I email her upon my return to let her know I had a good time in Sturgis and that I arrived home safely.
Although Latus Motors and Paradise Harley Davidson are three hours from where I live, when it is time for my next motorcycle I know where I will be going first. I can’t thank them enough. You are fortunate to have dealers of this caliber.
Sincerely,
