I have an 05 Ultra and have had to replace the latches about every 6 months. The only response from the dealer is they are willing to replace them for me if I keep buying the latches. It is frustrating that no one seems to have identified why some bikes continue to have problems and others do not. My failure mechanism is always the same. The threads shear off from the latch. It is obviously a weak point and would be an easy fix if the factory wanted to improve it. I wished someone made an aftermarket latch.
If anyone has any suggestions on what to try or perhaps what they have done to fix there problem I would appreciate it. They only option I believe I have at this point is to replace the bike and I do not want to go that route.
When are you having trouble, just going down the road or the actual opening and closing of them? If it is just while going down the road you may try and replace the hinges with the upgraded hinge kit and might help with the vibrations of the latches on the opening side.
Replace them with a latch from 2004. Mine seems to be doing fine.
You say "My failure mechanism is always the same. The threads shear off from the latch.",
but I'll be danged if I know what that means.
Replacing latches every three monthes does not even sound right....even with chinese crap. I might have to call B/S.
Gid day
I have an 03 Ultra and my latches have failed about 4 times in the life of the bike. I have found that when the small bolts did shere off it was because I have left them unlatched and I beleive that the vibration of the bike had something to do with it. Other than that they have been OK. Maybe try an 03 model latch, if they fit or if they are compatible.
