I don't have time to look it up right now, but I thought these newer engines would shut down with or without the parade mode activated, before they got so hot damage would occurr.???

This is the one thing I miss when I lived in CA. I know it's a little dangerous, but it was sure nice getting through bay area and Sacto traffic...splitting lanes. One time I had to put a boot on a guys fender cause he would not let me pass. He kept swirving in front of me. I know it pissed him off he had to sit in traffic, but come on

I don't know if I'm comparing apples to apples but just yesterday I have HD put an oil cooler on my '09 RKC. Gets super-hot in Memphis. I've still got scars on my calves from years ago to proove it (no more shorts for me!). Not a clue if any damage would be done over time but don't want to even have it on my mind.

That said, I'll do the same as all else in this thread. If 95+ and a looong wait is apparent, I'll shut 'r down.

Tkx to this forum I've got great electric clothing. Winter, come on!!

How Long Do You Idle In Traffic?

Is this a trick question?

No?

If I was in extreme heat like in the south I'd have some RJ's originals installed.

Ah that makes more sense then. I looked up the weather there and saw 89 degrees so I was thinking you were definately clear of any temperature red zone. I just thought these engines could take more than that...I have been stuck in traffic for well over 20 min at close to 100 degrees or so, never thought the engine would be in trouble. I guess I was wrong..

would have hauled *** up the side lane.
earlier this year a bunch of us went to see the shuttle take off and got stuck in MILES AND MILES of traffic heading back to orlando. lets say it was just about backed up from the shuttle to orlando. so yes we took the side road back. if we didnt we would have been out there for hours, all night long. as for the heat part of it, sure thing. i am outa there.

With the aggressive drivers in the Northeast, they'd be just as likely to see you coming and creep over to block your split lane, just out of spite. People will screw with other drivers (boxing them in, cutting them off) just to be *********.

The problem with an interstate is that you may be miles before the next cut-off. If it's a brutally hot summer day, I'll just pull over, relax and watch the frustrated cagers. Having the CB is nice because I can get a handle on the length of the tie-up from the truckers by listening (I rarely use the headset).

That's why it took so long. In traffic backups like that (moves 10 feet & stops, moves 10 more feet & stops, etc, etc, etc.) how long would you idle behind everybody else, before you did what I did, or just pulled over & shut it down for awhile? How long before you can damage the engine?
I've read in more than one thread that the engine will shut itself down completely before it overheats to the point of doing damage. Don't know if this is true or not, though. I know that the rear cylinder shuts down at a when the engine's idling and it reaches a certain temp.
