38500 miles the main drive gear bearing went. $850.00 . I had IDS installed at 7000 miles we changed the IDS bearing and isolators while the bike was in the shop.

For those that had problems.... what type of lubrication where you running. That may be instructive for the rest of us.

To each his own.

How could you tell the bearing was going out? With as much noise as these bikes make, I doubt I would ever hear it.

When we stopped and I shut the bike off and pushed it back into a parking space I got a clunking noise as I was pushing it back. I tried pushing it forward and had the noise. The next morning when the bike was cold it would not make the noise so I took it for a short warm up ride and sure enough the noise came back. I knew something was wrong and jacked the rear wheel to see where the noise was coming from and it was transmission, so I trailered it to the dealer.
I had been using 75/140 spectro and changed to 75/90 Amsoil, only because the Amsoil is easier to find here, however I don't think this failure had anything to do with lubrication.
When my bike was new before they came out with IDS I had the clatter problem bad in 5th and 6th gear all the way up to 75MPH. The IDS cured the clatter completly. I still wonder if that clatter and the bearing failure are related, maybe out of tolorence or something from the factory.
Like I said it broke at 38500 miles and I now have 41200 and it seems to be ok. Time and some more miles will tell.

Thanks for the details, just so the rest of us know what to look for.
