Fish, you and I are the same size, had some highway buffeting at the helmet with the stock 4".......I put an 8" Fastaire on and it is perfect with the stock seat and in the sunglass grey looks fine. Now I installed the Sidekick seat which is very comfy and looks super clean and it puts me 2" lower and about 1 1/2" back. Makes me have to look just "over the edge of the 8"....so I put the 4" stock sheild back on and it is very nice with the Sidekick seat.

I think if you play around with some of the dimensions with the seat and sheild you will find a sweet spot

A surprising amount of that turbulence (all the updraft) comes from around the fairing, not over it.

GliderXXX mentioned "freedom wings"... not sure what that is, by name, but HD sells some little plastic "wings" that mount to the three thumb screws along the lower outside edves of the fairing. Those things make a HUGE difference! I had (actually still have) a set of black ones from my old EG. If your bike is black, nobody would ever notice them on there.

BIG improvement!!!!

FishaFly,

Don't get anything less than a 9" windshield if you are using a stock seat. I had major buffeting and I stand 6'1" 190lbs. I had to buy something quick so I got a clear nine inch from a local aftermarket guy ($45). I will have to look into those attachable wings as stated earlier in this thread. Don't give up the fight yet! This is a real nice ride!

I believe you'll find that most of your buffeting is coming around (under) your batwing. I went to the 7" windshield and was catching hell with the buffeting. I then put the side wind deflectors back on my fairing and it made a HUGE difference.

Hey AggieFan you just might have something here. The other day I was breezin down the highway with no particular place to go. I was doing some mock foot placements as to where I thought my new set of highway pegs would go best. I set my boots up on the very top of the engine bars (make sure no one is in eyeshot). What this did is blocked the air flow from below. The wind around my head was almost non-existant. Gong! goes the freakin' bell! We have a winner. Where do we find those wing things or wind blockers yer talkin about?

As good looking and functioning combo as I've run across so far is an 8" "eurolip" shield from www.clearviewshields.com along with the "wings" and, esp. for long-hauls, the lower fairings. The "eurolip" design from Clearviewshields makes a given size shield perform like it was two inches taller, which is why the 8" works perfect for me at 5' 11. To get the products brochure, go to http://www.clearviewshields.com/custom.htm and fill in the info on your model etc and you'll get it in email. Before I got some good experience on an Ultra, I used to love getting a good pounding from the usual turbulence you get on a RK Classic, but then after experiencing that more or less "quite" calmness behind the Ultra configuration...and being able to listen to some sounds etc along with the instrumentation...well, it got me spoiled as shizznit real quick. I think that's when you lose your innocense or something on a Harley...

Ride safe,
