Looking to take a trip to the York plant and Gettysburg from N.E. Ohio. I want to take route 30 out of Pittburgh and wanted to know if anyone has any road info (i.e.; road condition, road work etc). Thanks in advance.
Can't tell you much about construction & backups. Maybe somebody who lives near Pittsburgh can help you with that one. I remember that the road itself is in pretty good shape, but there'll just be lots of traffic until you get east of Greensburg, over toward Bedford. From there on it'll be OK. There's a stretch on 30 where big trucks "not advised" --- probably because of the hills? Personally, I wouldn't take 30 from NE Ohio --- through the Pgh area. There are nicer rides to G'sburg, but you didn't ask for directions, so I'll leave it at that!
I'm not sure about west of Gettysburg but Rt 30 between Gettysburg and York is a mess. Construction and shifted lanes. Once you get to Gettysburg, you might want to consider going north on Rt 15 and taking Rt 234 across to York. The other option would be to take Rt 116 from Gettysburg to Hanover and then either RT194 or RT116 from Hanover to Rt 30. I think RT 194 bypasses the construction. Rt 116 bypasses it for sure.
Has been over 20 years since on that route and it sounds like the scenic route I remember, may be just that. Thanks for all who posted, I will rethink my route.
I am from Youngstown and my buddy and I just did this trip for gettysburg bike week back in july. we took rt 60 to rt 79 south and then took rt 70 all the way to New Stanton. We then picked up rt. 31 which will take u past Seven Springs Ski Resort and Hidden Valley Ski Resort. I believe we then picked up rt. 30 shortly after we passed the ski resorts. It was very slow because of all the trucks but we passed them and WOW was it awesome. The twists, turns and scenary up in those mountains was truely, unbelievable. It was one of the nicest rides that I have even been on, if not the best. I will talk to him to confirm the route that we took. He should still have it programed into his gps. One recommendation, try staying at the Best Western in gettsyburg. They have excellent service and a covered parking deck.
one more thing. we almost took 422 out of New Castle which will take u to rt 99 and then to rt 30. we did not take this way home because the weather channel said there was going to be bad weather there.

Thanks!! Will look at the map later this evening, sounds like my kind of ride. My buddy and I like to take only two lanes roads, only interested in the journey, we are both RETIRED and not on any time schedule. Sorry guys, hope I didn't step on any toes.
