I will be riding down the road, and go to accelerate and the engine will die, sputter some, then start and go to accelerate. It only happens sometimes, i can be riding, and when i accelerate, everything works fine.
It is bad when idling, it will sometimes die, and come back and black smoke will pour out of the exhaust.
Again, its a 96 road king, no mods other than Porker Pipes, don't know the model, they came with the bike
Sounds to me like the same symptoms as when the head temp sensor died in my '96 FLHRI. What you do is take out the sensor ( located in the middle of the front head), then use an ohm meter and measure it according to the specs in the service manual. It's a $100 part, and my bike ran like new again after I replaced it.
I had very similar symptoms on my 95 RK caused by failure of the coating inside the gas tank and particles clogging the fuel screen and the carb. I did not realize the gas tank was coated on the inside, but mine was. I removed the tank and cleaned it as best I could, removing the coating in quarter-sized pieces. Since then, I have cleaned the screen once and installed a filter in the fuel line.
I was wondering if you ever figured out your problem. I did a new fuel filter and blew all the lines out and it didn't improve anything. Its like its running really rich and fouling plugs left and right. When wide open it runs fine but at idle to half throttle the bike is unrideable. Was it the head temp sensor? Throttle position sensor? Any help would be great. I've got a 1996 electra glide classic.
pick up a manual, about $50 bucks, or call someone who works on evo's in your area, look for some referrals. You can also do a search on those specfic parts here on the forum in the evo section.
