Default Cam Advice?

Just came in to some unexpected $, before mamma knows about it want to invest in my 07' Ultra Classic. Have Rineharts-true duals and want a more "aggressive" sound and power. Buddy says cams will do it? Any advice on type etc? Also have a non-dealer HD experienced wrencher locally, what can I expect to pay

Depending on the price of the cams... bout 500 for parts.

Cams
Adjustable pushrods
Oil
Timing cover gasket (if you replace it)
Bandaids (putting the rod covers back on)

More when you Dyno to get the cams to perform.

Depending on your mileage, new lifters may have to be thrown in too.

I have the S&S 510 gear drive cams and very happy with the performance. I also get as much as 47 mpg when I don't twist too hard.

Andrews 26H or 21H cams in late model baggers work very well.

you will most likely get a long and opinions about cams.

There are a lot out there that will fit different needs.
Your specific need is important. Do you want low end/mid rage power or upper end power? Over all what are looking to achieve? Sound, performance, or improvement in riding abilities. Like 2 up, being able to use 6th gear much more efficiently.

You will most likely end up with more volume from your exhaust.
I wanted more low end and mid power so I went with the SE255 cams.
I saved some money by waiting until I had my cam chain tensioners (spelling) checked. At 30,000 miles I had them checked so the cam basket had to be removed. It cost $50 extra to have the cams installed. This is installation only. I bought the cams, adjustable push rods etc...

I think I made a good choice. It sounds better, somewhat of a loop but the performance is what I wanted in the low end and cruising range. MPG was not effected that much, lowered it 1 mpg over all but gained 4 mpg when using 6th gear. I live on a mountain and there are a lot of long inclines in Alabama so it paid off.

I am very happy with the S&S 510s on my 06 FLHXI. Pulls a lot harder through the 2800 - 5000 range. Does not run out of breath on top like it used to. Also consider going to gear drive and forget about the tensioner issues forever.

+1 on the cam opinions! When researching cams I found nearly everybody has a different opinion. Finally decided on the SE 255 cams which will be going in tomorrow! Yes there are better cams that produce better #'s at higher RPM's but I wanted a cam that performed where I operated at the most and the SE 255 looked to be what would fit me best , I guess I'll know later in the week if I made the right choice! When all said and done my set up will be SE 255 cams , D&D Fat-Cat exhaust , K&N A/F and PCIII with a dyno tune at Kendall Johnson Customs!

In an 07 you have hydraulic tensioners, so going to gear drive is not the issue that it is with 06 and earlier models. That being said, the SE(Screaming Eagle) 203 cam I have in my 05 FLHT works pretty well, and I feel may be the path of least resistance for you. Less $ on parts. I didn't use new pushrods. I gt a better sound and a noticeable power improvement.

I would suggest getting a cam like SE 255 or S&S 510 that pulls best between 2000-3500 RPM. I pulled down the data log of all the hours ran on my bike over the last year and i was really surprised how much of the time was spent between 2000-3000 RPM and how little was spent at 5000 RPM. And this was on a bike that i routinely run the crap out of.
