Default Oil Level in Primary

I just did switch to synthetic in all 3 holes on my R.K. I followed the manual on refilling the primary but Im having trouble seeing the fluid like it shows in the book. Its calls for 32oz. so thats what I put in it, but I cant really see down in there to see the level, Should I let it go at the recomended 32 oz. or is there a better way to check the level?

Thirty-two ounces is fine; just put in a quart and forget about it.

With the bike upright and level, pour your 32 in and then you will need to add another few oz to bring it in spec.......

The Clutch Plates and discs need to be partially submerged.....

When you are pouring the fluid in, yopu need to look at the Diaph. Spring bottom... You will see the fluid slowly raise up to form a puddle.....

When the puddle is even with the outer ring of the Clutch Hub, viola, you are where you need to be......

If you follow the manual to check your level, you will overfill by far. Like they've said, 32 OZ. and button it up. I used to pour through the derby cover, but last couple times I just poured through the inspection cover - that way you can check your tension too - and the gasket is cheaper.

So I have been doing it wrong all this time.........

Damn, Guess that the Instructors at MMI will need to be retrained as well.....

And the Svc Manuals will all need updated.....

Whod have thunk that I was doing it wrong all these years and I didn't even know it.....

Guess that the clutches will not need as much fluid to keep hooked up.....

And you say that I have to check the Primary chain Tension at the same time???? Wow, learn something new all the time........

Talk to 6 people, get 6 answers. I've asked the question 10 times and got the same answer 7 of them - sticking with that... my .02 and a few others in this thread. Follow whatever advice makes you feel comfortable I guess. Could be 7 out of 10 are wrong though too. You never know..... I've seen several posts in various forums where folks have been steered in the wrong direction by dealers and Indy's alike. Who knows at this point.

Well I did exactly that and Ive got to say you were right on the money. The picture in the service manual is worthless, but with 32 oz. I could not even see the fluid, I added another 1 1/2 oz. a 1/2 at a time and next thing you know I could see the "puddle" a the spring bottom just as you said. Now I know. Thanks a million.
