Heh, interesting thread. Just got my first Harley a couple of weeks ago and the stand scares the crap out of me. The bike moved forward a bit once and now I have no faith in it at all.

Good to know that's normal. I have this silly routine where I hold the stand down with my foot and slowly, gingerly lean the bike over. Perhaps now I can relax when I park the bike.

My SG rolls forward so far that I have actually had buddies grab the handlebar to help me "save it" from going over. I'm used to it now, but, when I first got the bike it really made me jumpy!!

Picking up my 08 RK from the dealer. They let me in the shop while they do final prep. The bike is on the jiffystand and the tech is laying on the floor next to the bike along the lean-to side (ie if it goes over it lands right on him) He wants to add some air in the rear tire but the valve stem is not where he can get it. So he just grabs the rear tire by the tread and pulls down on it causing the bike to roll backward dragging the jiffystand along on the smooth concrete floor. I say to him holy smoke are you crazy? He says not a bit, this stand the way it locks in has never failed... I still think he's crazy.

When I was looking to buy my '09 Ultra at the local HD dealership, they had a neatly organized row of closely spaced brand new bikes on the floor. The salesman invited me to sit on the first one in the row, which I did. He suggested I stand it up and get the feel of it, which I did. I raised the KS and dreamed of hitting the open road on this monster machine. Convinced this was the bike for me and the Ms., I put the KS down and set her down. It rocked forward and my heart about exploded in my chest thinking the KS was not all the way down. I broke into a cold sweat with the vision of 10 or so brand new motorcycles falling over in a cascading domino effect there in the showroom because of my screw up. F^%k!
To this day, it still bugs me when it does that and I will look down to make sure that damn tab is fully engaged before I set her down.
I see it's a big club with a large following. :0) Thanks, I feel better.

Interesting since the valve stem is on the right side. I had the kickstand catch and pop back on pavement when sliding the bike back, the bike went down.

i dont understand how this could happen since when you put weight on the jiffy stand, the tab locks into place. moving the bike back would tend to lock it even more, plus, the stand has to move back to lift, moving it backward would go against the lifting action.

It takes some getting used to. Just make sure the tab is in the slot. No worries.

Like I said it was on blacktop, I said pavement. I was leaning on the bike a little with my hip and just trying to roll it back and it caught and then poped back enough that when I let the bike down the kickstand folded up. Probable just my luck but your welcome to argue, I must of had just enough weight off it so your point is well taken also. I'm just saying it can happen if on blacktop.

Mine does, especially when I don't turn the wheel to the left. But once it's locked in it isn't going anywhere. I quit worrying about it.

no man, no arguments. you said it happened, i believe it, after all, it was your bike. i just couldn't figure out how it would have happened. i could sort of see it if the bike were being pushed forward, but not backward. i can see it a little better now that you've explained it the way you did. i think the key was taking the weight off of it.

i think you would be hardpressed to find a jiffy stand that works better than the hd one. just takes some getting used to, and it doesn't hurt to double check before leaning the bike over to make sure that the tab is in place.
